Lossy Light Field Compression

The aim of this paper is to propose, implement and evaluate a new lossy compression method for light field images. The proposed method extends the JPEG method to four dimensions and brings new ideas which lead to better compression performance. Correlation between light field views is exploited in both dimensions by four-dimensional discrete cosine transformation. The lossy part of the encoding is performed by quantization, similarly to the JPEG method. The proposed method is implemented as a program library in a C++ language. This paper compares the proposed method to JPEG, JPEG 2000 and HEVC intra image compression methods and HEVC video compression method. The results show that the proposed method outperforms the reference methods with images with a higher amount of views. HEVC video method is better for images with fewer views or for very low bitrates.
Light field photography

The aim of this thesis is to explain terms like light field, plenoptic camera or digital lens. Also the goal is to explain the principle of rendering the resulting images with the option to select the plane of focus, depth of field, changes in perspective and partial change in the angle of the point of view. The main outputs of this thesis are scripts for rendering images from Lytro camera and the interactive application, which clearly demonstrates the principles of plenoptic sensing.

The digital photography is still trying to catch-up with its analogous counterpart and recording light direction is one of the most recent area of interest. The first and still the only one light-field camera for consumers, the Lytro camera, has reached market in 2011. This work introduces the light-field theory and recording with special emphasis on illustrating the principles in 2D, gives an overview of current hardware and ongoing research in the area and analyses the Lytro camera itself, describing the closed file formats and protocols it uses so that further research can be conducted. An important contribution of the work is a .NET portable library for developers, supplemented by a file editor as well as an application for wireless communication with the camera based on the library.
